A Farmers' Market is a community of independent growers and artisan food producers who meet regularly to sell their food products directly to the public. That food is produced in a defined local region. There are no middle men, no supply contracts, no bulk buying agreements, just independent producers selling their food products at fair prices.

Pak N Save supermarkets do not resemble Farmers' Markets in any way; they do not sell only food, the people who produce the food do not sell it and the food is not grown or made only in a defined local region.

A complaint has been laid with the Commerce Commission under the fair-trading act in regards to misleading the shopping consumers of New Zealand.

The focus of the Pak N Save, is "New Zealand's lowest food prices" whereas the focus of Farmers' Markets is to provide access for the public to high quality, seasonal, locally produced food, thereby supporting the local economy and social fabric of New Zealand.

Farmers' Markets New Zealand urges shoppers not to be fooled by this advertising campaign and see for themselves by visiting a Farmers' Market near them.

Taste Farmers' Market Awards 2011

In a time of debate over high-fructose corn syrup, high salt, high fat, food miles, pesticides, insecticides, herbicides and genetic engineering, it's good to know that some things stay the way they should – fresh, natural and local.

The first-ever Taste Farmers' Market Awards 2011 are out to unearth the finest, freshest, most authentic food that is value for money.

Community members are encouraged to vote for their local farmers' market in the 2011 Awards by visiting www.tastefarmersmarkets.org.nz. A trip for two to Singapore is up for grabs for one lucky voter to explore Singapore's farmers' market and join in traditional cooking classes.

"Everyone loves the taste of fresh produce, particularly when it has been grown close to home. Farmers' markets are all about celebrating seasonal, local produce that enliven our senses, and our cooking," says Chris Fortune, Chairman of the Farmers' Market New Zealand Association.

"With the price of food on the rise, farmers' markets and their affordability are growing in popularity. There has been a real shift in the attitude of consumers - New Zealanders want to know what is in their food, and how it's grown," he says.

The Taste Farmers' Markets Awards 2011 will put the spotlight on the very best markets from around the country and encourage the idea of communities supporting their local producers.

So what is a localvore then ?

Sounds like some sort of posh y name for somebody who has too much time on their hands.

Well you can be a herbivore or an omnivore, so why not somebody who pays attention to where their food comes from and commits to eating local food as much as possible? This is not some nutcase religion, it is just about eating local. It is not an all-or-nothing venture, it is all about helping the environment, protecting your family's health and supporting small farmers and food producers in your region.

The first bite to being a localvore is to determine what local means to yourself and your family: it could be food from a 100-kilometre radius, if could be from the whole of the South Island or even the whole of New Zealand. It is an individual decision that you need to be comfortable with.

The key is that by creating a boundary, no matter how large or small, you are becoming conscious of the origin of your food. You can even go one step further and draw a circle around your home or region and this will help you with your food choices.

We are all born localvores, it is just that sometimes we forget just what is in our backyard and what is in season.

We may not be able to tackle the big issues of the world, but we are able to help build sustainable and connected communities by supporting each other.

Five ways to become a localvore in New Zealand

Visit a farmers' market. There are now more than 50 located from Invercargill to the Bay of Islands. Some are big, some are small, but the key is that they represent their regional seasons and producers. Farmers' markets keep small farms in business. Rather than going through a middle man, the farmer or producer will take home nearly all of the money you spend on regional produce – there are no on-sellers, resellers or people that just buy at the cheapest price and try to move it as fast as they can, regardless of the quality or where it has come from.

Ask your supermarket manager where your meat, produce and dairy is coming from. Remember that supermarket managers are influenced by what you say and do. Let the managers know what's important to you.

Preserve a local food of the season. By freezing, bottling and preserving you get to eat and enjoy flavours all year.

Have a look for restaurants in your area that support local farmers and producers. Ask the restaurants about ingredients or ask your favourite farmers what restaurant accounts they have. Frequent businesses that support farmers in your region.

Ask about origins. What you may have taken for granted as New Zealand-produced may come as a surprise.

HONEY-SPICED APRICOTS

Serve these with dollops of yoghurt for breakfast or dinner, or add a crumble topping and bake in the oven for a quick dessert. If all else fails, just eat them straight from the jar.

2kg whole Marlborough apricots

cinnamon sticks and cloves for each jar

4 cups white wine vinegar

500g Marlborough honey

With a fork, prick the apricots all over and place them into cold sterilised jars. Place two cloves and one cinnamon stick in each jar. Bring the vinegar and honey to the boil and simmer for five minutes until it just starts to thicken, then pour over the apricots. Leave to cool before sealing the jars. For best flavour, leave for one month and use within 12 months.

My TV show Annabel Langbein The Free Range Cook was filmed at my little cabin on the shores of Lake Wanaka, where I am lucky enough to maintain a large vegetable garden that provides much of my family's fresh produce.

I have always grown my own vegetables - something that was instilled in me by my father Fred, who maintained a prodigious garden that provided us with a nutritious and interesting diet.

When I started cooking, I learnt early on that the fresher your ingredients, the less work there is for you in the kitchen. With nature on your side it’s easy to be a great cook and enjoy delicious meals at the drop of the hat.

The fluorescent atmosphere of a supermarket may make everything look good, but looks don’t necessarily equate to flavour or succulence. And it is this difference in flavour which goes a long way to explain the phenomenal popularity of farmers' markets.

In the freshly picked harvests of local growers, we discover older and lesser known varieties of produce grown because they taste good, not because they suit the long life requirements of a supermarket supply chain.

I also like the fact farmers' markets create a sense of community – something fast disappearing from our lives as people get busier and the big chains bump out old-timer providores.

Each week at the markets, the same friendly faces greet and cajole. I love this chance to try something new and be tempted by an artisan spread, cheese or specialty sausage. So, even without a backyard garden, it's possible to enjoy what is in season at its very best. New Zealand is blessed with some wonderful farmers’ markets where you can support local growers and cook in sync with nature's harvests.

Fancy growing your own vegetables and raising chooks? One Cambridge family talks about living sustainably and eating off the land.

A fantail flits through the air as Burton and Alison Worth and daughter Sacha, 2, harvest vegetables from their garden.

Their cow Mimi watches on, chews contentedly on cabbage leaves, and in a nearby paddock pet Berkshire pig Rosie snuffles and free-range chickens peck the ground.

The Worth family are living the sustainable dream – farm biodynamically, growing vegetables and raising cows and chickens – on a one-hectare lifestyle block at Pukerimu, near Cambridge.

"I'd say 70 per cent of what we eat every night is ours – eggs, dairy, fruit and vegetables," says Alison, a former chef who recently took over marketing the Hamilton and Cambridge farmers' markets.

Most days Alison milks cows Mimi and Millie, and Burton turns the milk into cheese and butter. There are free-range eggs from the chickens and a variety of winter veges in the garden.

The Worths relocated from Auckland 18 months ago seeking "the Good Life" and set up Locavore, selling produce at the farmers' markets.

"We want to get back to grass roots," says Alison. "We want to provide people with nutritionally dense fruit and vegetables that are not covered with lots of pesticides."

They grow "lots of unusual stuff"' for the market including cavolo nero (black kale) and kohlrabi (German turnip). They also grow and sell seedlings so people can begin their own home gardens.

British-born Alison has been a chef for more than 20 years, and came to New Zealand in 1999 while working on a super yacht, and ended up staying. She ran her own cookschool, Main Course, for six years in Auckland before selling it in 2009. Alison has worked with many of New Zealand's top food writers and chefs, including Peta Mathias and Julie Biuso.

Burton, who has a background in horticulture and a commerce degree, is interested in biodynamic farming. Although he grew up on a kiwifruit orchard at Kumeu, his farming philosophy has evolved from using sprays and chemicals to farming organically. "I have a passion for getting back to the soil and organics and creating a closed, self-sustaining farming organism."

Part of that is the dung produced from the cows and two horses, Clyde and Melanie, which goes back into the soil as fertiliser.

''One of the things we've noticed about farming organically is that all the birds and insects have come back (into the garden),'' says Alison.

The Worths say Kiwis are part of a global movement towards more sustainable living, organic produce and knowing where their food comes from.

''People are really appreciating the importance of good food,'' says Burton. ''The biggest shift for us was when Sacha was born; we were looking at what we were feeding her and us, so with that came this lifestyle shift.''

Part of that change has involved sharing their excess produce with the public. In winter they sell only at the Cambridge Farmers' Market but in summer, when they have more produce to sell (including beans, garden peas, celery and five varieties of potatoes), they attend both Cambridge and Hamilton markets.

Two months ago Alison was appointed the new public relations and marketing manager for the markets. ''I love farmers' markets. They are full of passionate people,'' she says. ''Farmers' markets are really taking off and I'm proud to say New Zealand is one of the leading countries in the world as far as produce-only markets are concerned, with standards for trading and genuine transparency, so customers are buying direct from the producer.''

The Waikato markets are both certified as Authentic Farmers' Markets by the Farmers' Markets New Zealand Association (FMNZ).

Farmers' market rules dictate only producers, their family or employees can front the stalls.

The Hamilton and Cambridge Farmers' Markets charter dictates that 80 per cent of products sold have been caught, grown, raised or produced locally (within 100 kilometres or two hours' drive of the market). The other 20 per cent includes imported coffee roasted and packaged locally, or South Island salmon processed and smoked in the Waikato.

Held on Sunday mornings, Hamilton is the bigger market, with around 35 to 40 stalls in winter. Come summer 60 stalls are likely. Most weekends it is ''buzzing'', says Alison.

People wander past stalls with bags stuffed with apples, loaves of fresh bread and leafy greens. There are pots of honey and jam for sampling, as well as Italian handmade gnocchi, creamy Waikato cheese, Scottish oatcakes and Cornish pasties.

It's a similar busy scene at the Cambridge Farmers' Market in Victoria Square every Saturday morning; people coming to get in-season produce and handmade, artisan food.

In late September the Te Awamutu Farmers' Market will launch, pending resource consent. It will be a ''twilight market'' on Thursday afternoons.

Alison hopes the Te Awamutu market will encourage those in the surrounding region to bring their excess produce to the market or start planting spare paddocks with interesting vegetables to supply year round or in season. ''I hope Te Awamutu sees people putting their hands up to grow something at home, and to get more involved in their community.''

She believes the markets are the perfect incubator for small business; a place to start small, do weekly one-on-one market research (customers will quickly tell you what they want and what they like) and grow.

Alison also wants to get young people more involved in Waikato farmers' markets. A plan is afoot to begin a ''Young Marketers'' programme at the Cambridge Farmers' Market, where children aged from 5 to 15 can sell produce or homemade food or drink at a ''community stall''.

''The idea is there is a stall there each week and they can sell what they have grown or made or harvested, from field mushrooms to chestnuts to old fashioned lemonade,'' says Alison.

''There is heaps of opportunity. I'd like to see more people bringing their excess (produce) to market or see people plant different varieties or bring in an old heirloom variety that no one has seen before. It's about getting back to old ways, of swapping jams and making the most of the land, and celebrating that sense of community.''

Farmers' market leaders from Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Great Britain meeting at the 3^rdNational Australian Farmers' Market Conference in Victoria this week, pledged today to establish and uphold standards for farmers' markets and to create a platform for the exchange of information and best practice that will support the global, sustainable development of the farmers' market movement.

The group will initiate an open forum and invites local food producers, market organisers and supporters to participate in positive exchanges that will help to improve local economies and communities through farmers' markets, and provide greater access to locally produced food for all.

FARMA's Gareth Jones was among the speakers at the conference. Others included Richard McCarthy from Crescent City farmers' market in New Orleans, USA, whose experiences with Hurricane Katrina four years ago mirrored those of the population around Melbourne during 'Black Saturday's' forest fires last summer.

The organisers and speakers at the event took the opportunity to formalise future relations with a communique highlighting the urgent need for a rebalancing and relocalising of food around the globe in the interests of reducing carbon emissions and improving diet, livelihoods and the environment.

News From Coroglen Farmers Market

My name is Kevin.

I run / manage the Coroglen farmers Market with my friend Fiona.

Last friday the two of us travelled over the 309 road to catch up with Ashley who runs the Coromandel Town Farmers Market on the other side of the peninsula, and to also check out the towns Community garden.

I have to say Coromandel town market looks GREAT!

Clean , hygienic , well presented, set up on the street frontage of a lovely restaurant called The Pepper Tree. We bought some seedlings and some macadamia treats and caught up with old friends.

The community garden interests me as we have been given the go ahead to develop our own community garden on the spare land behind our community hall where we hold our Coroglen market each sunday.

A farmers market and a community garden together i feel is a "marriage made in heaven"....a perfect combination.

We close our market on Queens Birthday for the winter and reopen on Labor weekend. The next four months will be busy for us developing our market / community garden. We close on a high note after a very busy and successful season and we all look forward to reopening refreshed and full of energy.

Of course......... we have some stallholders who would like to trade on through the winter but the 'majority' favor a break. Our feeling is that after our hard work building up our market over spring summer and autumn..........we are better off shutting completely for winter although i confess i personally can see it from both sides of the argument.

Because many of us will be 'on-site' over the winter months gardening we still have the option of selling direct from our vehicles for those that want to and for those who have produce coming on strong. As you are all aware gardening and food production here in the Coromandel can be just as productive as spring summer .

I personally favor winter gardening/growing as i find i have less pests to deal with especially the with the brassica family.

Fiona is our IT expert and in between her full time jobs is busy coding our complete web site.

At present all we have up is a welcoming page but we hope to be up and running fully before we reopen.

Tauranga Farmers' Market 6th Birthday Celebration

Tauranga Farmers Market is currently celebrating their birthday. 6 years in total and 4 at the present site - Tauranga Primary School, cnr Cameron Road and Arundel Street.

Main birthday market is 30th May with the Mayor Stuart Crosby and Principal Jenny McNicol coming in at 10.30am to cut the cake.

Birthday Hampers will be drawn after this. Entry tickets available for free every Saturday during the month of May.

Hamilton Farmers' Market wants a new home but so far events have conspired to prevent it finding a permanent spot, Denise Irvine reports.

Wanted: New central city site for burgeoning Sunday morning Hamilton Farmers' Market, must have good access, space for 40 or more stalls in summer, potential for further growth, and car parking for 1000 or so customers. Some kind of shelter would be a bonus. Must appeal to regular customers, and attract new ones. All ideas appreciated.

It's a tall order, and market manager Kerryn Jensen will be relieved to see a solution. In the past few months the market trust has unsuccessfully lobbied Hamilton City Council for a site at Claudelands Events Centre; it has tried a mid-week summer market in Garden Place that has foundered through lack of customer parking; and it's had an enthusiastic approach from The Base which hasn't gone down well with some regulars who say they don't want to traipse out to Te Rapa for their fruit and veges.

So for the moment, the city's weekly "paddock to plate" event is sitting tight at the Wintec car park on the corner of Tristram and Collingwood Sts where it's been since it started just over three years. But the problem is, it's now a tad too tight at the Wintec site. Jensen says while the area is much appreciated, it has struggled to cope on peak summer days when there have been up to 46 stalls. "I look out at the car park and it's chocka. People are walking up from other car parks and nearby streets."

Jensen says the push for a new venue is also driven by the approach of winter and the exposed nature of the Wintec property: "We hoped we'd have some shelter for our customers by winter but that's not looking likely. We're open to ideas and offers, we're kind of stuck."

The market's favoured place is Claudelands Events Centre, where it had its eye on a disused wooden barn which trust chairman Jonathan Walker believes would work well. The rustic old barn in need of repair is near the Brooklyn Rd entrance and its faded sign states "Stud Sales Pavilion", a reminder of Claudelands' colourful history of hosting agricultural events.

While this seems a neat fit for Hamilton's Sunday stallholders, they've come up against Hamilton City Council's planned $68 million redevelopment of the park. In a joint memo on the barn's potential, council's general manager communication and marketing, Philip Burton, and general manager community service, Sue Duignan, say the building would need extensive renovation at considerable cost. It is not part of the long-term vision for the site and will eventually be demolished.

There would also be conflict between the market and events booked at Claudelands. Burton and Duignan's memo estimates such bookings would prevent the market running at least half the time. "To have the Farmers' Market operate on even a semi-regular basis would seem to be contrary to council's stated position of having Claudelands operate as an event venue, not for regular activities which may preclude larger one-off or annual events and have a negative impact on the business plan."

Market regular customer Fiona Sneyd continues to back the Claudelands barn: "It would provide the perfect position and ambience." While Sneyd understands the council's commitment to big events she says it risks alienating its locals. "We need to make life better for people who live in Hamilton and the market is a crucial part of this."

Sneyd is the customer representative on the market trust and has been shopping at the Sunday food stalls since they first opened. "It is an important part of the way I live." She would be unhappy about a move to The Base, concerned it would leave a vacancy in the heart of the city. "We should be nurturing our town centre."

Stallholders and customers got a taste of Claudelands last Sunday when the market moved there temporarily during the Hamilton 400 race. It was set up in the car park off Heaphy Tce and Jonathan Walker says there was excellent feedback from shoppers. "It's slap bang in the middle of our customer base. We really would like to work from there."

With the barn not available, Walker says they'd be happy to use the extensive car park or some other part of the grounds and the trust will try the council again on this.

The chances don't look good: Philip Burton points again to the council memo, and to issues such as the long period of construction scheduled for Claudelands, and future conflict with event bookings.

Burton likes the idea of closing a central city street for the market each Sunday, but local government legislation says it can only be done 21 times a year. The council may look further at this.

Burton says the council backed the market from the start and there is plenty of goodwill: "We'd love to find a better place for them. We're still trying as hard as we can, we're keen to see a flourishing Farmers' Market."

Walker wants to "get around the table" with the council. "We really want to work with them because they control the best sites. It is the only way forward and we want to keep it going."

Walker has been a stallholder from day one, selling his specialty Soggy Bottom Holding bacon and sausages. "The market has been a business incubator for us, turning a hobby into an almost fulltime business. It's a great social event as well."
